# Multiple Rates per Room

Sell the same room at more than one price, like a cheaper non-refundable rate or a breakfast rate, using Derived Rates on the room's Rates tab.

Sometimes you want to sell the same beds at two prices. A normal rate and a cheaper non-refundable one, say, or a rate with breakfast that costs a bit more. You don't need a second room for that. You add a **derived rate** to the room you already have.

A derived rate has no prices of its own. It takes the room's normal price and moves it up or down by an amount or a percentage. Change a price on the [Pricing page](/front-desk/pricing.md) and the derived rate moves with it.

## Add a derived rate

1. Go to [Room Inventory](https://finance.hostelmate.co/property/inventory).
2. Click the pencil icon next to the room.
3. Open the **Rates** tab.
4. Scroll down to **Derived Rates** and click **Create Rate**.
5. Fill in:
   * **Rate Title**: the name you'll pick when you map it on your channels, like "Non-refundable".
   * **Adjustment Method**: Increase by amount, Increase by percent, Decrease by amount, or Decrease by percent.
   * **Value**: just the number, like 10.
6. Click **Create**.

Say your dorm bed is $20 a night. For a non-refundable rate 10% cheaper, choose **Decrease by percent** and enter **10**. Guests pay $18. For a breakfast rate $5 dearer, choose **Increase by amount** and enter **5**. Guests pay $25.

## Map it on your channels

A new rate doesn't sell anywhere until you map it. On each channel you want to sell it on, map the channel's rate to your new one, the same way you mapped your rooms. That's step 3 in [General Connection Setup](/channel-mapping-guides/general-connection-setup.md).

If the channel doesn't have a matching rate yet, create it in the channel's extranet first. We only send the price. Whether a rate is non-refundable or includes breakfast is set on the channel's side. More on that in [What Hostel Mate Controls](/channel-mapping-guides/what-hostel-mate-controls.md).

## Good to know

* Closed dates and minimum stays come from the room's main rate, same as the price. You can't set them separately on a derived rate.
* Both rates sell the same beds. A booking on either one takes a bed from that room.
* The Pricing page only shows the main price. Derived rates don't get their own row.
* Your booking engine only sells the main rate. Derived rates are for your channels.

## Changing or deleting a derived rate

Click the pencil icon on the rate to rename it or change the adjustment, then click **Save Changes**.

The edit window also has an **Add Rule** button for stacking a second adjustment. Keep to one rule per rate. Some channels only use the first rule, so extra rules would give those channels a different price from the rest.

The trash icon deletes the rate. It asks you to confirm, and it can't be undone. Before you delete one, unmap it on your channels (or close the matching rate in the extranet), so nothing is left pointing at a rate that's gone.

## Leave Standard Rates alone

{% hint style="warning" %}
Above Derived Rates there's a **Standard Rates** section with its own **Create Rate** button. Don't use that one to add a rate.

The prices you set on the Pricing page only go to the room's original standard rate. A new standard rate doesn't get any of them.

If you've made one by mistake, delete it with its trash icon. The newest one is at the top of the list, so check the name before you click. Never delete the original one: your prices and all your derived rates depend on it.
{% endhint %}

## If Create gives you an error

It usually means the room isn't connected to your channel manager yet. Go to the room's **Room Info** tab. If there's a **Channel Connectivity** box saying "Not Synced", click **Sync** and try again.
